Fort Edward Board Intends to Appoint Superintendent

Fort Edward, April 25, 2022 – The Fort Edward Union Free School District Board of Education is pleased to announce its intent to appoint Richard DeMallie, Ed.D. as Superintendent of Schools at a special meeting of the Board of Education on Wednesday, April 27, 2022. Dr. DeMallie is currently the High School Principal at The Gloversville Enlarged School District.

Board President Thomas Roche stated, “The Fort Edward Board is thrilled to welcome Dr. DeMallie as the new superintendent of the district beginning this July. We began the search in the fall with a community survey, followed by a community forum in January to gather input from the entire community for the desired characteristics of the next superintendent. After three rounds of interviews, Richard rose to top of our list and it became clear to the Board that he has the skills and experiences to successfully lead the Fort Edward Union Free School District. As a Board, we would also like to thank all of the faculty, staff, students, and community members who participated in the process.

The Board is offering Dr. DeMallie a three-year agreement with an initial salary of $133,000. He is expected to begin his duties on July 1, 2022.

Dr. DeMallie has been with The Gloversville Enlarged School District for 21 years. He began his career with the district as a Physical Education Teacher for Grades 6-12 from 2001-2005. He joined the administrative team in 2005 serving as the Assistant High School Principal for 3 years until being promoted to High School Principal in 2008.  He began his career in education in 1996 splitting his time between instructing Physical Education and In-School Suspension Teacher with the Scotia-Glenville Central School District. In 1998 he joined LaSalle School for Boys (Albany) as a Physical Education Teacher.

Dr. DeMallie stated, “I am truly honored to become a member of the Fort Edward Union Free School District as their next Superintendent. The excitement I have to join the school and continue to provide the children of Fort Edward with a wonderful educational experience is hard to put into words. I look forward to entrenching myself in the community and working with all stakeholders to the benefit of every child in the district. My family and I thank the Board of Education and the community of Fort Edward for this opportunity.

Dr. DeMallie earned his Associates of Liberal Arts & Science Degree with a major in Physical Education from Fulton Montgomery Community College, Bachelor of Science in Education from the State University of New York at Cortland, Masters of Science in Educational Administration at The College of St. Rose, and Doctorate in Educational Leadership from The Sage College of Albany. He holds the following NYS certifications: Physical Education, School Administrator/Supervisor, School District Leader, and NYS Council of School Superintendents Future Superintendents Academy.

WSWHE BOCES District Superintendent James Dexter, who coordinated the search on behalf of the district, said: “The Fort Edward Union Free School Districts Board of Education conducted a thorough search for a new superintendent, involving stakeholders at every point. The best interests of the students were at the forefront of all of their decisions, and allowed the Board to choose the candidate who best fits their ideals. I would like to thank all the individuals from the school and community who participated in the community forum, the advisory committees and helped in the selection process.”

Dr. DeMallie will replace Interim Superintendent Mark Bessen. Richard has been married to his wife Patricia for 20 years. She is also an educator who has 30 years of teaching experience in the area of Special Education. They have a daughter Karina who will begin her first year of high school this upcoming school year.
