Who is a School Counselor?

What does a School Counselor Do?

  • Helps work with individuals and groups
  • Helps identify needs of students
  • Encourages better inter-personal relationships

What is the purpose of individual counseling group meetings and classroom guidance?

  • To help students develop self-understanding and self-awareness
  • To build self-confidence and self-esteem
  • To encourage students to recognize and make the best use of their capabilities
  • To provide opportunities for students to feel successful
  • To give students an opportunity to talk about educational and personal social concerns
  • To encourage students to recognize, understand and work through learning difficulties
  • To help students better adjust to school and home environments
  • To develop students’ awareness of the world of work
  • To teach students the decision-making/problem-solving process
  • To help students think about options for post-secondary education
  • To help students apply to colleges or for jobs

Information about Student Scholarships

Adirondack Paralegal Association - $500 to a graduating senior who will pursue educational opportunities in an accredited vocational or academic program. Applicants must be a resident of Warren, Washington or Saratoga County. Applications are available in the Guidance Office. The deadline is March 10.

Adirondack Runners - To be eligible a student must be a high school senior in Warren, Washington, Hamilton, Essex and Saratoga Counties or high school seniors who are members-in-good-standing with The Adirondack Runners. More information and application packet is available in the Guidance Office. The deadline is April 25.

The American Legion - A 152 page book titled "Need a Lift," which lists scholarships, grants and loans that students might qualify for it is available at www.needalift.org

Association of Fire Districts of the State of New York - Must be related to or be a firefighter in an affiliated member organization of the Association of Fire Districts of the State of New York. www.firedistnys.com The deadline is the first Saturday in March.

AT & T and BBB (Better Business Bureau) - The AT & T and BBB Science & Technology Scholarship. www.upstateny.bbb.org The deadline is January 10.

AXA Achievement Community Scholarship - www.axaachievement.com The deadline is February 15.

BBB (Better Business Bureau) - The Student of Intregrity Scholarship. Application available at www.upstateny.bbb.org The dealine is January 14.

The Ben Osborn Memorial Fund Scholarship - The Ben Osborn Memorial Fund Scholarship is awarded to two students who meet the following criteria: a good character, charitable heart, current need, commitment to self-improvement, service (to others) oriented. The successful applicants must write a three paragraph essay on one of two topics: Service or Patriatism. The deadline is May 15.

Best Buy Scholarship - Apply at www.bestbuy.com/scholarships The deadline is February 15.

BRANNY Scholarship Award - Students planning a career in construction who will attend a 2 or 4 year accredited college and have a 3.0 GPA. The application must be postmarked by January 11. Applications are available in the Guidance Office.

Burger King Scholars Program - www.bk.com/scholars Apply online from October 15, 2007 - February 15.

Coca-Cola Scholars Foundation - www.coca-colascholars.org The deadline is October 31.

Cornell University- Cooperative Extension Washington County Master Gardener Scholarship Incentive Award $250 to students interested in horticulture, agriculture, environmental studies, forestry or related fields. More information and application are available in the Guidance Office. The deadline is May 16.

Elks National Foundation - www.elks.org/enf/scholars Applications are available in the Guidance Office. Deadline is January 9

Empire State Potato Growers, Inc. - www.empirepotatogrowers.com Open to anyone in the potato industry. The deadline is January 15

Fort Edward Historical Association - Entry forms and detailed information are available from the high school art teacher or the Guidance Office. Deadline is April 5.

Fort Edward Teachers Association - This scholarship is for a student who plans to enter teaching as a profession. Applications are available in the Guidance Office. The deadline is May 14.

Glens Falls Community Theatre - Two $1,000 scholarships to students who will pursue a degree in music, music education, drama, dance or technical theater. Applications are in the Guidance Office. The deadline is May 1.

Hudson River Community Credit Union - Applications are available in the Guidance Office. The deadline is April 1.

New York State Association of Agricultural Fairs and New York State Showpeople's Association - Six $1,000 scholarships to be awarded annually. Applicant must be pursuing a degree in an agricultural or fair management related field. Applications must be downloaded from the NYSAAF website, www.nyfairs.org Deadline is the second Saturday in April.

Grace Ryan Newell Memorial Scholarship - $500 scholarship given annually in memory of Grace Ryan Newell, Fort Edward High School Class of 1929, to a member of the Fort Edward High School graduating class who plans on furthering his/her education at an institution of higher learning. Applications are available in the Guidance Office. The deadline is May 15.

Robert J. Nolan Foundation Scholarship - Applications are available in the Guidance Office. The deadline is May 16.

Price Chopper's Golub Foundation - Several scholarships at www.pricechopper.com Click on Community and then Scholarships. The deadline is March 15. Applicants can only apply for one scholarship.

Retiree Council Ten - Applicants will indicate his/her intention to become an educator. Applications are available in the Guidance Office. Applications must be postmarked by March 15.

The Sandy Hill Foundation - Applications are available in the Guidance Office. The grants will be for $1,750 each. The deadline is April 1.

Clarence (Butch) William Shaw Memorial Scholarship - $1,000 in memory of Clarence (Butch) William Shaw who graduated from Fort Edward High School in 1961. Applications are available in the Guidance Office. The deadline is May 15.

St. Mary's Parish College Scholarships - Applications are available in the Guidance Office or online at www.stmarysparishscholar.com/ The deadline is April 18.

TCT Federal Credit Union - Scholarship applications may be requested at any branch. Open to members of TCT Federal Credit Union. The deadline is January 25.

Tri-County Branch NY Division Woman's National FARM & GARDEN Association, Inc - This scholarship is for a graduating high school senior or advanced student who will be attending college with a major in an agricultural, or environmental, forestry, horticultural or oceanographic related field. More information and application are available in the Guidance Office. The deadline is May 2.

Tri County Council Vietnam Era Veterans - Four $1,000 scholarships. The scholarship is open to CHILDREN and GRANDCHILDREN of Honorably Discharged Veterans of ALL conflicts. Applications are available in the Guidance Office. The deadline is April 15.

Wal Mart - www.walmartfoundation.org The deadline is January 14.

Warren Washington County Medical Alliance - $1,000. Applicant must be a resident of Warren or Washington County at the time of application. Applicant must have a minimum GPS of 2.5 and demonstrate financial need. Applicants should be planning to pursue a health-related course of study. Applications are available in the Guidance Office. The deadline is April 30.

Washington County Association of Street and Highway Officials - The Annual Ralph E. McKernon Memorial Scholarship Award - $1,500 to a student who has been accepted in the field of engineering. Preference given to a student who enters the Civil Engineering field. Applications are available in the Guidance Office. The deadline is May 1.

Zonta Club of Glens Falls, New York - Applications are available in the Guidance Office or can be downloaded at www.ZontaDistrict2.org/GlensFalls Applications must be received by April. Please allow three days for mailing time.

Zonta Club of Glens Falls, New York - "Young Women in Public Affairs" and the Jean M. Coon Humanitarian Award for voluntary service -Each winner will receive $400 and be a guest at the annual Intercity Dinner. More detailed information and applications are in the Guidance Office. The deadline is March 25.
