Reassessment and Tax Levy Explained

Reassessment and Tax Levy Explained
Posted on 03/12/2022
Due to the  reassessment recently conducted in Fort Edward many of the properties have increased significantly in assessed value.   The amount the school district receives from the community does not change unless approved by the community via a public vote.   What the assessed value changes is the tax rate per $1000 of a home's value.  As the value of the community as a whole increased the tax rate per $1000 has dropped.  The assessment form you received from the village indicates if you would have paid more, the same or less in September 2021 based on how much your property increased in value in relation to all the properties in Fort Edward Village using last year's levy.  A presentation that explains this in more detail was made to the board of education and community at the BOE meeting August 2021 and is available here for viewing.  We hope this helps to explain how a reassessment affects tax rate only.  The reassessment is not a function of the school district nor does the district receive any more funding due to the changes made by the assessor.
