COVID-19 Testing Update 1/5/2022
01/05/2022
The top priority of the Fort Edward Union Free School District is to offer a safe and secure environment where students can attend in-person learning 100% of the time. As shared with you last week via a robocall and our social media accounts you may be aware, that throughout the holiday recess, the NYS Department of Health, Governor Huchol and state health commissioner Dr. Bassett all released guidance memos that address potential new protocols related to school districts and COVID 19. Included within these messages was a statement that over 37 million rapid tests had been ordered by the state and that these tests would be delivered to each school district for use and distribution. This morning we received 390 test kits. These tests come with instructions for use that must be followed whether given at home or at school. (Directions and a video on how to utilize these tests are posted on our website.) Please be aware that tests given at home by a parent will be considered advisory to the family and cannot be accepted by the school as an official test result. If you would like a test kit to use at home for your child, tests are available for pick up and sign out in the district’s nurses office. Tests will be available Thursday, January 6, 2022. We are only able to issue one test per student. The district is in the process of planning to offer a test to stay program. This requires the district to apply for a Limited Lab License with the NYS Health Department. Once we receive permission to engage with testing we will provide you with more information regarding the test to stay program. We have been told the process takes approximately three to four weeks until approval is granted. Test to stay will allow us to screen, for asymptomatic unvaccinated school-based close contacts of a COVID positive individual to avoid school exclusion (but not other restrictions of quarantine) by testing negative through serial testing using the rapid NAAT tests we have been provided during a seven-day period following exposure. When approved -The exposed person will be required to test before school in the nurse’s office a minimum of three times during a 7 day period following exposure. The person must have a negative test and be asymptomatic to return, but can do so while under county quarantine under this guidance. With the exception of attending school, the student/person is still quarantined for all other activities, including extracurricular. Besides acquiring a lab license, having an adequate testing supply will eventually determine our ability to implement and sustain this program. It continues to be critically important that if your student is displaying any COVID-like symptoms or is not feeling well, students, faculty and staff are still required to follow the NYS DOH algorithm for return to school. As always, I continue to appreciate your patience and support as we work through this challenging time together. On behalf of the district administration, faculty, staff, and Board of Education I would like to wish everyone a safe, healthy, and Happy New Year. Sincerely, Mark Bessen Interim Superintendent

COVID-19 Update 12-30-2021
12/30/2021
Important message regarding the district’s response to news you may be hearing concerning the COVID 19 pandemic. As you may be aware, throughout the holiday recess, the NYS Department of Health, Governor Huchol and State Health commissioner Dr. Bassett have all released guidance memos that address potential new protocols related to school districts and COVID 19. Included within these messages was a statement that over 37 million rapid tests have been ordered by the state and that these tests will be delivered to each school district for use and distribution. At this time our region has not received any of the ordered tests and we do not anticipate receipt until early next week. Once we receive the tests, additional information on how the tests will be utilized and distributed will be provided. It is important to note that a negative test is not required for students to return to school on Monday, January 3rd. However, if your student is displaying any COVID-like symptoms or is not feeling well please do not report to school. Students, faculty and staff are still required to follow the NYS DOH guidance that is currently in place regarding return to school. As always, we at the FEUFSD continue to appreciate your patience and support as we work through this challenging time together. On behalf of the district administration, faculty, staff, and Board of Education I would like to wish everyone a safe, healthy, and happy New Year. Mark Bessen Interim Superintendent

Annexation Study Update
10/06/2021
Proposed merger with Fort Edward and SouthGlens Fall ends A proposed acquisition merger between the South Glens Falls Central School District and the Fort Edward Union Free School will not be moving forward following two board meetings Wednesday. The Fort Edward board voted against sending the merger plan to a public vote in a 4 to 5 vote. The South Glens Falls board of education voted for 9 to 0. The proposal needed both boards to approve sending the matter to a “straw vote,” or advisory referendum. “I appreciate that our Board of Education voted to take this important topic to our residents. Any proposal this crucial should be decided by our voters.” said South Glens Falls Superintendent Kristine Orr. “While the district was prepared to move forward with this work, we understand that now was just not the right time to proceed.” “We would like to thank South Glens Falls for their assistance and support through the process. It was reassuring to have a neighboring district reach out and help us through the research and consideration of supporting our school. I would like to thank SGF Superintendent Kristine Orr and SGF school board President William Elder, along with the South Glens Falls board, for their efforts. I would also like to recognize all that gave so much time and effort in serving on the committees especially while dealing with COVID limitations and obstacles. I would commend the board for all of the work in sifting through the data as well as listening to various stakeholders to make the decision they felt was in the best interest of the district,” said Thomas Roche, Fort Edward Board President. “Now we, the Faculty, Administration, the Board and the community will move forward to plan for future budgets, policies and initiatives to ensure the children of Fort Edward receive the best we can provide.” Said Mark Bessen Fort Edward Superintendent South Glens Falls and Fort Edward boards of education, administration and staff also wish to thank Castillo & Silky Education Consultants LLC for their work on the merger study. We also extend our thanks to the merger study committee for the work they have done in preparing for this step.

Parent Pickup and Drop off instructions
09/07/2021
One change for parents needing to enter the school in the morning or any other time for school related concerns. Parents/Guardians and others will need to wait until after all students have been screened and admitted to the building. Parents and guardians must make an appointment ahead of time with a specific staff member before coming to school. Email, phone calls and video conferencing is preferred over in person meetings. The school will accommodate in person requests if absolutely necessary, but will do so by appointment only. If a parent or guardian is simply dropping something off for a student they can do so between 9am and 2pm, but they will be asked to leave it in the foyer and will not be allowed into the building. If the item being dropped off is medication a staff member will come to the foyer to receive it.

Principal's Message September 2021
09/03/2021
I want to take this opportunity to say hello and welcome our students back to school. I will be the PK-12 Interim Principal for the 2021-2022 school year. I am proud to be back at our school and in a position that I held for 13 years while here at Fort Edward. After serving here, I was the Superintendent of Abraham Wing School until my retirement in 2019. Since then, I have held Interim Principal positions in Whitehall and Hudson Falls. I am looking forward to the start of school and having all students back in classes five days a week. Our teachers and staff have been working hard this summer preparing for an exciting and successful school year. We are hopeful that we can bring back important activities for our students and community to enjoy such as concerts, Science Fairs, Art Shows, plays, a regular sports season, and other events to showcase the talents of our students. We are excited to see our students experience success and achieve their goals this year. We will need the help of our parents as we take a team-approach in supporting all students. It is important that students are here everyday in order for us to provide them with the best opportunities to learn and grow. It is our hope that they get involved in school activities beyond the classroom so they can make new friends and have new experiences. Just a reminder that our first day of school is Thursday, September 9th. Students attending our BOCES program should be here September 8th for an 11:20am bus departure. All drop-off and pick-up procedures are the same as last year. If you have any questions that we can help you with, please feel free to call the school at (518) 747-4529. Again, we are ready and excited to see you! Sincerely, John Godfrey Interim Principal

Welcome Back Letter and COVID-19 Update
08/06/2021
Fort Edward School Families: As you may be aware, the Center for Disease Control (CDC) issued an updated guidance document that includes recommendations for the daily operation of K-12 schools. The CDC is recommending that masks should be worn by all individuals at all times within the school building, regardless of the individual's vaccination status. At this time the New York State department of Health has not provided any guidance for schools. Therefore, the only guidance we have is that of the CDC. We have been told the State is reviewing the CDC recommendations, and that State guidance which could potentially be more restricting than the guidance from the CDC can be issued in the very near future allowing us time to adjust and properly prepare for a full reopening in the fall. In the absence of any NYSDOH guidance, local county department of health officials, BOCES leaders, and school superintendents have been meeting weekly to develop a regional plan on best practices for a safe opening. It includes following the CDC recommendation to reduce the social distancing in the classrooms from 6 feet to 3 feet, this will allow us at Fort Edward to return to full in-person instructional environment in September. There are still numerous questions regarding cafeteria protocols and athletics. Be assured that County, BOCES and Adirondack League workgroups are working as hard as possible to establish safe and reasonable plans to allow children and families to return in September to a more traditional school experience. We also continue to request from the state their official guidance in order to provide our communities with the most accurate information possible. Our main goal as we work through reopening the Fort Edward Union Free School District for September 2021 is to bring all of our students, faculty, and staff back to a safe learning environment. and to provide our students the full in-person instructional experience they deserve. I look forward to working with all to make the 2021-22 school year a positive and worthwhile experience for all engaged in our school community. Sincerely, Mark Bessen Interim Superintendent of Schools

Mask Update June 2021
06/08/2021
June 7, 2021 Subject: NYS Mask Policy for Schools Dear Fort Edward Families, On Friday June 4, Dr. Howard Zucker, New York State Commissioner of Health issued a letter (click here to read) to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) regarding differing mask policies for summer camps and schools. Media coverage of this letter has led to some confusion and inferred that mask wearing in schools was optional. On Sunday June 6, schools received guidance from the New York State Department of Education which was contrary to the letter from Dr. Zucker. The New York State Department of Education informed schools that the Department of Health’s letter has not changed any existing arrangements. “Therefore, schools should continue to operate under their existing procedures until further notice.” Today, Governor Andrew M. Cuomo announced that after conferring with the CDC “school districts can choose to lift the requirement that their students must wear masks outdoors. Guidance on mask use indoors remains in place”. To view the Governors full press release, click here. Although we are still awaiting final official guidance from the Governor’s office, I wanted to get word to you as soon as possible. Please know that the health and safety of our students will continue to be our top priority. Thank you in advance for your patience and cooperation as we continue to work through this situation. Sincerely, Daniel A. Ward Superintendent of Schools Fort Edward Union Free School District

Irving Tissue Helps FE Community

Irving and FE Local Officials Step Up in a HUGE Way! The Village, Town, and School collaborated to provide necessary and timely information to the local Irving team concerning the Fort Edward Plant’s assessment, the PILOT agreement, and the town wide revaluation process. This collaboration was led by Mayor Matt Traver, Town Board Member Terry Middleton, Town Assessor Rosemary Lemery, and Village Board Member Dave Cutler. The school would like to give credit where credit is due, without the quick action of those Village and Town officials it is highly doubtful that the current outcome would have been realized. Additionally the school would like to express our extreme gratitude to the Irving Corporation, Robert Irving, and to our local Irving Team here at the Fort Edward Plant. Local Irving team members Eric Dawson, and Eric Smatko, played a huge part in Irving’s action on the current assessment. They along with Tracy Podnorszki and all the employees at Irving have shown time and time again what it means to be a good community partner. Thank to everyone from Irving, the Village and the Town for showing such meaningful team work. #WeAreFortEdward Sincerely, Dan Ward and the Fort Edward Board of Education

In the interest of keeping everyone informed of changes that occur at the Fort Edward School District we would like to address the topic of testing our students, faculty, and staff for COVID-19 as directed by the New York State Cluster Action Initiative.

The district learned today that two members of our school community have tested positive for COVID-19. Our first priority is the safety of all of our students, faculty, and staff. To that end, the Fort Edward Campus will transition to Fully Remote Instruction for Monday, January 11th, Tuesday, January 12th and Wednesday, January 13th. Again, there will be No In-Person Instruction on those dates. We expect that In-Person Instruction on the Fort Edward Campus will resume on Thursday, January 14th. During the PAUSE of the Fort Edward Campus, students that attend the entirety of their school program at other school campuses will continue their normal schedule.

Student Health Screening Information
09/12/2020
All students are required to have a health screening prior to entering the school buildings. The school is asking that parents make every effort to screen their children before sending or bringing them to campus. Our ability to reopen school safely and ability to remain open is truly dependent on parent cooperation with home screening. Additionally we are strongly recommending using the online screening as this will be the most efficient way for screening to be verified and will expedite student entry in the morning.
